Call for Entry: Edges, MA/RI Region

Theme:
We encounter many edges in our lives – the edge between water and land, land and sky, day and night, fall and winter, hope and discouragement. We can equally live on the edge, negotiating a path between difficult options or exploring life to its limits.
Artists are invited to explore and present their own interpretation of the theme, “Edges”.
Juror:
Anastasia Azure
Anastasia Azure hand-weaves dimensional art, exploring the grace of geometry. She shares her connection with our harmonious universe by creating contemporary wall sculptures and innovative jewelry. Combining metalsmithing with an ancient, Peruvian weaving technique, she uses wire and hand-dyed nylon monofilament on a traditional floor loom.
She earned her MFA in Textiles at the Rhode Island School of Design in 2011 and a BFA in Jewelry Metal Arts at the California College of the Arts in 2005.She has been an Artist- in Residence at University of Massachusetts Dartmouth and the Appalachian Center for Craft. She travels the globe teaching imaginative textile and jewelry workshops. Her
recent art commissions include the U.S. Embassy (Maputo, Mozambique) and the Grand Hyatt (Abu Dhabi, UAE)

Eligibility and Guidelines:
PLEASE PAY CAREFUL ATTENTION TO THESE REQUIREMENTS. ANY SUBMITTED PIECES THAT DEVIATE FROM THESE PARAMETERS WILL NOT BE JURIED AND WILL BE RETURNED TO THE ARTIST AT THE ARTIST’S EXPENSE.

• Artist must be a SAQA member of the MA/RI region to enter If MA/RI is your second region you are also welcome to enter.
• Consideration is by digital images only (directions below).
• Artist may submit up to three (3) works.
• Size restrictions are as follows:
o Height: At least 20” but no more than 48”
o Width: At least 20 but no more than 48”
o Minimum size accepted will be 20” by 20”.
o Maximum size accepted will be 48” by 48”
o Depth: piece must not extend from the wall more than 6”.
Wall hung pieces, whether flat or dimensional, must hang from a standard 4” pocket sewn to the back of the work and weigh no more than 6 pounds. All works must include a removable rod or stick that does not extend beyond the quilt borders.
In the case of work that is mounted to stretcher bars or stretched canvas, you will be required to submit an additional photo for the jurying process. The third photo will have to be of the side and corner of the work so that the jurors can see how the edges and corner are finished. You will also be required to install a wire hanging system on the back so that the work can be easily hung. The wire should be installed so that it does not show above the work when it is hanging and that it hangs flat against the wall.
Please follow the requirements in the Call for Entry carefully. If your submission doesn’t fit the parameters, it will not be accepted to the exhibition.
All submitted pieces must meet the size requirements in the prospectus. Any accepted works that deviate from these parameters will be rejected and returned to the artist at the artist’s expense.
Artwork must meet the SAQA definition of an art quilt: The art quilt is a creative visual work that is layered and stitched or that references this form of stitched layered structure.
Quilts must not have been exhibited previously in a SAQA MA/RI exhibit. Quilts must be in pristine condition and be show ready.
Quilts with pre-programmed computerized machine quilting are not eligible.
Quilts made or derived from kits, workshops, classes or commercial patterns are not eligible.
All work must include a label securely fastened on the back with the artist’s name and contact information, as well as the title of the work and the completion date.
Artists are responsible for shipping and insurance of accepted works directly to the exhibiting premier venue.
Artists will also be responsible for shipping and insurance for returning artwork back to the artist when the exhibition is over by providing return shipping label from the last venue in the touring exhibit.
Artwork MAY be for sale:
Highfield Hall will charge a 40% commission on all sales. The New England Quilt Museum will charge a 25% commission on all sales. Please consider the commission when you price your work. The price you set will be valid for both venues.
Work must be available through July 31, 2021. Travel details to follow. It is the policy of SAQA that once work is accepted, it cannot be withdrawn for any reason until the end of the run.
By submitting your work for review, you confirm that you will adhere to all of the above.

Digital Images submission guidelines:
Failure to comply with the digital image submission guidelines may result in the rejection of your submission!
Submit one overall DIGITAL image and one detail DIGITAL image for each piece of artwork.
HOW TO SUBMIT DIGITAL IMAGES
Save your digital images as a high quality JPEG file (No TIFF files). Finished image should be 2100 pixels on the longest side.
If your work is mounted to stretcher bars or stretched canvas you are required to submit an additional photo. The third photo must be of the side and corner of the work so that jurors can see how the edges and corner are finished.
Label each digital image with first 1-3 words of the artwork title, no spaces and no punctuation and indicate if detail or full. Examples: GolddustFull.jpg or GolddustDetail.jpg
You will be asked to agree with these Terms and Conditions:
I agree to loan my artwork to Studio Art Quilt Associates, Inc. I understand that the cost of insuring and shipping my artwork to The New England Quilt Museum Lowell MA as well as the cost for insuring and providing a paid shipping label for my artwork to be sent back to me from Highfield Hall, Falmouth MA at the end of the exhibit are my responsibility. I further agree to permit the images or detail images and/or all or part of my artist statement to be used in the exhibition catalog, articles, ads, promotions, books, websites, blogs, CDs, current event news coverage, television productions, and/or multi-media productions for and about the exhibit or for and about the shows at which the exhibit may be seen.
Fee:
$30 entry fee for up to three entries. Members must pay their fees using a credit card (MC, Visa, or Amex) or Paypal through the SAQA Store. Fee must be paid before entry deadline listed above.
