​This exhibit of works by five artists in fiber is a unique insight into the relationships of a critique group. Judy Becker, Nancy Crasco, Sandy Donabed, Sylvia Einstein, and Carol Anne Grotrian have been meeting each month for thirty years to support and sustain each other as artists. Nancy Crasco states, “the focus of our gatherings is always about the work: assisting with aesthetic and construction concerns, sharing opportunities to exhibit, discussing current trends in fiber, and providing the impetus to continue creating.”  All of the artists have gained national recognition and have exhibited widely in the United States and abroad.

Each of the artists has a distinct style which is acknowledged and encouraged by the others.  They agree that the scariest outcome of a critique group would be to have their works be similar.  Each artist has a different source of motivation or inspiration and employs a unique manner of working.

The exhibit is currently open at the New England Quilt Museum (NEQM) and runs through April 29, 2017. The Curator's Reception and Gallery Talk with the Artists is scheduled for Saturday, January 28, 2017 at 11:00 am. There is a snow date set for the reception in the case of inclement weather which is February 4. The museum is located at 18 Shattuck St in Lowell, MA. Ro Morrissey - "Turning Tide"

The Brewster Ladies’ Library is pleased to present Fall for Fiber, a mixed media fiber art show, from October 4 to 29, 2016. The artists featured are Christine Anderson, Madeline Arnault, June Calendar, Carol Flax, Carol Fitzsimons, Robin Maguire, Ro Morrissey, Toni Newhall, Jane Parhiala, Meredith Pearson, Elaine Skoler, and Susannah Wheelwright. The artists first came together in 2014 to create a show for the New Church in Yarmouthport. Since then, the group, informally known as "Fiber Frenzy," has grown in reputation, obtaining shows at the Museum of Natural History in Brewster and at the Woodruffs Art Center in Mashpee.

The public is invited to a reception at the Library on Saturday, October 8 from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m.

This exhibit is sponsored by the Brewster Ladies’ Library. Please call the library at (508) 896-3913 before coming, due to the exhibition room sometimes being in use for a program and not open for viewing. The Brewster Ladies' Library is located at 1822 Main St. In Brewster, MA.

Artwork by SAQA MA/RI member Lee Sproull is included in an exhibit of art quilts which were inspired by the work of Sol LeWitt whose work was full of graphic design, line and bold color. The exhibition is created by the Modern Quilt Guild of Northampton, MA and shows in the Eclipse Mill Gallery in North Adams, MA. The exhibit opens on September 23 with an Opening Reception from 6:00pm to 8:00pm.

Member Janis Doucette has artwork accepted into a regional showing of fiber at the Arsenal Center for the Arts in Watertown, MA. Fiber in the Present Tense 2016 is a juried exhibition to showcase the fiber artwork of the MA/RI Chapter of the Surface Design Association (SDA). The Juror for this show is member Marcia Young who is a SAQA Board of Directors member and Editor of "Fiber Art Now Magazine".

The Arsenal Center for the Arts is located on 321 Arsenal St. In Watertown, MA. Summer hours for the gallery are Monday through Friday from 12:00 to 5:00 pm. The Arsenal Center for the Arts is seeking the work of artists from the Greater Boston Area for their annual Small Works exhibition happening November 10 - December 30, 2016. The work will be exhibited in their first and second floor galleries and will be on display throughout the holiday season. Works must be 12" x 12" or smaller and can be 2D or 3D but must be priced under $300.00. Arsenal Center for the Arts will retain 40% on the sale of works. A maximum of four pieces per artist will be chosen but up to 10 pieces may be submitted for consideration. Submit all work in JPEG format (not larger than 300ppi) Include name, address, phone number, email address on corresponding numbered sheet with title, medium, size and artist statement. Submit to Aneleise Ruggles at aneleiseruggles@arsenalarts.org not later than October 1, 2016. Jury fee is $20.00 and should be mailed to:

The Arsenal Center for the Arts

The Arsenal Center for the Arts seeks artists in the Greater Boston Area to exhibit and sell their fine arts and crafts in The Shop. The Shop features fine arts and crafts from over 40 artists at any given time. They open their doors to thousands of employees at the Arsenal on the Charles Complex, patrons from the New Repertory Theatre and the Watertown Children's Theatre, patrons at Panera Bread and La Casa de Pedro and other shoppers offering them the opportunity to purchase beautiful handcrafted artwork. All items must be original, hand-crafted work and each artist may offer a wide variety of items. The number of items accepted will be determined by the Program Director.

Artists are invited to participate in the opportunity by submitting 3-5 images of you work via email along with name, phone, website, medium and price range for consideration to beverlysnow@arsenalarts.org. Inventory from selected artists will exceed the original 5 items submitted. Dawn Allen's Secret Garden

A solo exhibit  highlighting Dawn Allen's fabric art from the past two years, will be at the Rinnova Gallery in Westfield, MA, September through October and the artist reception will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 pm on Friday, October 7.. Most of the artwork from the "Larger Than Life Flowers" series will be there as well as several new and not yet exhibited pieces.

The “Larger Than Life Flowers” series is inspired by the moment in the Wizard of Oz when the movie turns to color and the camera pans across giant colorful flowers. This series is fun, exiting, and happy. These original art pieces hang on the wall and bring cheer to your space.

All of the pieces are made from fabric using modern art quilting techniques and Dawn's own method of transforming the usually flat quilt medium into three dimensional art.

SAQA MA/RI member, Madalene Murphy, has artwork accepted into a group exhibition by the Abstract Artists Group of New England (AAGNE) which will open on August 30, 2016 at the Newburyport Art Association (NAA) Gallery in Newburyport, MA. In Possibility is one of five pieces that Madalene has in the exhibit. The Opening Reception will by held on Saturday, September 3, 2016 from 7:00 to 9:00 pm at the NAA Gallery. There will be live jazz by Barbara London and Rick Kress. The reception is free and open to the public.

The exhibit will be on view from August 30 to September 11, 2016 at the NAA Gallery on 65 Water St. in Newburyport, MA. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm and Sunday from 1:00 to 5:00 pm. For more info call 978 465-8769.

Intertwined – Needle Art of Salley Mavor

Several of Salley Mavor's new embroidered bas-relief pieces will be shown at the Bristol Art Museum this fall, including Whiskers, Cover Up, Face Time, Birds of Beebe Woods and the premiere showing of Displaced. Katherine French, executive director of the Danforth Museum in Framingham, MA said of Salley's exhibit, “This is very sophisticated work. When you describe it, it sounds too precious, but the reaction is one of amazement. People hear about it and say, ‘Oh, that’s nice,’ but then they see it and are blown away.”

Of her new work Salley confides, "In a productive year, I can make 2 large (24″ x 30″) pieces, so it takes several years to accumulate enough work to hang together in a solo show. That’s why I’ve held off selling my new pieces. I just finished Displaced, which will have its premiere showing at the Bristol Art Museum in Rhode Island this fall." 

Birds of Beebe Woods

For those living in or near Rhode Island, the Bristol Art Museum encourages the creation, promotion and appreciation of the arts through exhibitions and educational opportunities. For those looking to visit from further afield, Bristol is a lovely town sprinkled with galleries, shops and eateries and is located on Rhode Island's East Bay not far from Newport. Salley's work can be found at the Abbott Low Gallery of the Bristol Art Museum in the main building located at 10 Wardwell St, Bristol, RI. Member News - Ann Brauer

Member, Ann Brauer, was chosen out of a field of 150 applicants to be one of 89 artists in attendance at the Berkshire Crafts Fair, an annual juried arts show. Held yearly, the show runs from August 12 through August 14, 2016. Drawing artists from California to Maine, one hallmark of the show is it's breadth of master artisans showing a wide array of contemporary and traditional craft. Funds, raised from the ticket sales ($8 per person) at the Berkshire Craft Fair, benefit the Monument Mountain Regional High School.

The 43rd annual Berkshire Crafts Fair will take place August 12, 13 and 14, 2016 from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm at the Monument Mountain Regional High School, at 600 Stockbridge Rd., in Great Barrington, MA.

“Irma and Doris Go Wine Tasting” is a Fabric Art Exhibit featuring artist Dawn Allen. Dawn recently discussed her choice of names for her work in her blog, "As I was feeding my donkeys and horse, I was reflecting on how naming art pieces and naming animals is a similar process and an honor. That is when it came to me to name my flowers with human names rather that title them!" Sharing the name of the exhibit, the piece below is 6 feet tall and each of the leaves are named separately and will be sold separately.

"Irma and Doris Go Wine Tasting" is a veritable garden of three-dimensional fabric flowers and foliage. You’ll want to get “up close and personal” to fully appreciate and enjoy the size, intricacies of beads and thread, and vibrancy of color in all of Dawn's creations. The cotton sateen fabrics themselves feature Dawn’s original designs—bright graphic patterns created from her own photographs of flowers and nature. Dawn’s exclusive hidden-wire technique brings each piece to life in three dimensions. Do not miss this glorious garden!

Dawn Allen started quilting and beading when she was a child. She loves creating three-dimensional fabric art—“happy art”—that brings color, whimsy, and beauty into any space. Her work has recently been exhibited at the Fuller Craft Museum in Brockton, MA and at Highfield Hall and Gardens in Falmouth, MA. Her home studio is in Westfield, MA.

The exhibit can be viewed at Black Birch Vineyard, 155 Glendale Rd, Southampton, MA from August 5 to September 25, 2016. Hours at the vineyard are 12:00 pm to 6:00 pm. The Artist’s Reception will be held on Friday, August 5th from  6:00 pm to 7:30 pm.

Upper East Side Flower Shop

One of our newest members, Nancy Donovan, has had her quilt, Upper East Side Flower Shop accepted for the exhibit "In Full Bloom" at the International Quilt Festival in Houston, Texas this fall. International Quilt Festival is scheduled this year for November 3  through November 6, 2016. "In Full Bloom" is one of the many shows within the big show and will be on display throughout the festival. Go to IQF to find out more information about the festival.

Salley Mavor’s Wee World

SAQA MA/RI member, Salley Mavor has a very exciting exhibit happening in our area. Don't we all wish we had a great reason to go to the Providence Children's Museum, the premier fun destination for children of all ages. Salley has given us one.

  

This ThinkSpace Exhibit features selected wee folk dolls, houses and props, plus 2 original fabric relief illustrations from “Pocketful of Posies” in the Geometry Gallery display case. Pocketful of Posies: A Treasury of Nursery Rhymes is a 72-page, full-color, hardcover edition, illustrated in fabric relief by Salley Mavor and published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. Pocketful of Posies won the 2011 Boston Globe-Horn Book Award for Picture Book and the Golden Kite Award for picture book illustration from the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators. 

Original fabric relief illustrations from Pocketful of Posies have been exhibited around the country. The tour began when the book was published in September, 2010 and concluded in February 2016. Two of the original 50 illustrations from this book will be on display at the Children's Museum. Salley's book, Pocketful of Posies: A Treasury of Nursery Rhymes  is available from Amazon.com.   Autographed copies are available from Salley Mavor’s Etsy shop.

Member News - Jeanne Marklin

MovingPlans?

Jeanne Marklin has three art quilts in the Vessels Invitational Exhibit of Mixed Media at the Meeting House Gallery, New Marlborough, MA. The opening is Friday, June 17, 2016 from 5:00 to 7:00 pm and Jeanne would love to have some SAQA members join her at the opening, or the next day from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm when she will be sitting at the gallery.

The exhibit will continue through July 10, 2016 and the gallery will be open Fridays, Saturday and Sundays 11:00 am to 4:00 pm. Meeting House Gallery is at 154 Hartsville-New Marlborough Road, New Marlborough, MA.

Member News - Wen Redmond

Wen Redmond has a mini exhibit at the League of NH Craftsmen's Gallery, 13 Lebanon St, in Hanover, NH. The Annual Spring Show features three artists, Blair LaBella - jewelry, Wen Redmond - contemporary fiber, and Evan Williams & Grace Pejouhy - woodfired pottery. The show will be on view through June 30 and the gallery is open Monday - Saturday from 10:00 am to 5:30 pm. For more information call (603) 643-5050. 

Bringing the Outside In

Wen just completed a solo exhibit at the Textile Center in Minneapolis and part of that exhibit can be seen at Eversource Energy, 780 N. Commercial St, Manchester, NH. The Eversource exhibit runs for 3 months through the end of August.

Wen recently traveled to the Ruth Funk Textile Center at Florida's Institute of Technology to present a lecture about her upcoming book, Digital Explorations in Fiber and Paper and spoke at the opening for SAQA's exhibit Radical Elements.

It has been a busy spring for Wen and it will continue to be a busy summer. Wen was invited to be a juror for the Art Quilts at the Whistler 2016 exhibition. She will be returning to teaching for a few more years as well. Member News - Wen Redmond

Wen Redmond is the August Artist of the Month at Exeter Fine Crafts in Exeter, New Hampshire. Working from a process that involves an ongoing dialogue between her chosen media, intuition and innovative fiber photography work, Wen creates stunning mixed media fiber art including scarves, encaustic works and her well-known, unique wall pieces.

     Merging photography, digital printing, collage, surface design and fiber, Wen creates one-of-a-kind works of art. An experienced quilter, Wen's work is often biographical or journalistic in nature as she works out of insight, inspiration, feeling and reactions to the outer world. She often works in layers, using non-traditional quilting techniques to transform scraps of fiber and photography into contemporary works of art. 

     Wen has created several signature techniques including: Holographic Images, Textured Photographs, Digital Fiber and Serendipity Collage Technique. She delights in creating dialogue, changing perspectives and perceptions of fiber. Lately, she has extended her media to create stunning encaustic works that combine fabrics and original photographic images with hot beeswax and resin.

     Wen has won numerous awards for her work, recently including: 2nd place at the Infinity Art Gallery, Best in Fiber at the 2012 League of NH Craftsmen, "Living with Crafts" exhibit, "Best in Two Dimensional Design," at a 2011 League of NH Craftsmen Show and was a Niche finalist three times. A juried member of the League of NH Craftsman for over 20 years, she has authored many articles that have been published in books and magazines, appeared on DVD workshops and been featured on Quilting Arts television. Wen's work can also be found in galleries, juried and solo art shows, internationally.

On Saturday, August 15, as part of the Summer Celebration of New England Quilts, quilt artist and instructor, Carol Anne Grotrian will share how she has explored the ancient Japanese tradition of shibori dyeing in her quilted landscapes for over thirty years. Carol will be bringing many quilts for viewing and will employ a few digital images in her lecture. She will demonstrate how this forerunner to tie-dye creates fabric patterns that are especially beautiful when dyed in indigo. The program will be held at 11 am in the Conference Room at the National Park Visitor Center, 246 Market Street, Lowell, MA. This program is free, but space is limited so reserve a space by calling 978-452-4207, ext 16. This is one block from the New England Quilt Museum, where there are more quilts on exhibit.

Member News - Diane Franklin

Diane Franklin has work in four exhibits this summer and fall. Two of these exhibits have passed but two of them are opening in August.





Tropic Nights will be shown in the Out of the Blue exhibit at the Whistler Museum of Art, 243 Worthen St, in Lowell, MA. This exhibit celebrates the inspiration and new techniques that flow from a wellspring of creativity often called .....Out of the Blue. This exhibit runs from August 12 through September 19, 2015. The Artist Reception will be held Saturday, August 15th, from 2-4 pm.

Deep Waters, a newer piece, will be part of the fall Water Effect exhibition at the Schweinfurth Art Center, 205 Genesee St, in Auburn, NY. The exhibition will include 78 pieces by 57 different artists and features a range of mediums including painting, photography, sculpture, textiles and video. It runs from August 29 through October 18, 2015. The Artist Reception will be held on Friday, September 4, from 5-8pm and is free and open to the public.

Larger Than Life Flowers, a solo exhibit at Black Birch Vineyard in Southampton, MA, will be on view for the month of August. This is Dawn Allen's first solo art show and she is very excited to invite you to the Artist's Reception on July 30 from 6:30-8:00 pm.
