Our second exhibition, Explorations: Journeys in Creativity: The Artist's Studio, Part 1, will debut in October, running from October 3 to December 30, 2018.  The full color catalog for Explorations: Journeys in Creativity: The Quilt Artist's Studio is being finalized. Look for an email coming to you soon with pre-order information. You will be able to order ahead for this amazing catalog, and pick up your order at the meeting or opening reception at NEQM on October 13.

Catalogs will sell for $24.95, and include 6 pages of incredibly detailed information and great full color photos for each of the 24 chosen artists. This is a book full of wonderful information from your colleagues and friends that you all will want to have in your libraries. If you can't pre-order, don't worry, catalogs will also be available for sale at the opening.

A great deal of work by our wonderful Exhibition Committee is coming to fruition this month!  Our current regional show, Stepping Inside the Outside, opens this month on Saturday, September 8, 2018 at Highfield Hall, 58 Highfield Dr., Falmouth, MA, and runs until October 31, 2018.

Our congratulations to all of the artists exhibiting! There were 84 entries by 38 artists who applied to the show. Of the 38, 30 artists were chosen. Of the 84, 35 works were chosen by two jurors, Mary Horrocks of Colorado, and Joshua Willis of New Mexico.  In total 37 pieces will hang at Highfield, including one of the juror, Mary Horrocks, and one of the curator, Nancy Turbitt. The other juror's piece by Joshua Willis will hang when the show travels to Bristol Art Museum.  

Highfield Hall is a restored Victorian estate, complete with beautiful outdoor gardens which visitors are encouraged to explore. 

The reception is being held from 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm on Sunday, September 9, 2018, following our regional meeting at the Falmouth Art Center, 137 Giffords St., Falmouth, MA, 10:30 am to 12:30 pm.  Admission to Highfield Hall is free this day only, as it is open house for Highland Hall!  Please bring a sack lunch, Show and Tell, and your enthusiasm for our meeting and this special event!

In addition to our show, another fiber exhibit curated by "Fiber Arts Now" magazine editor in chief, Marcia Young, entitled “Tapestry in New England and Beyond,” will also be on view.  We suggest you make it a day trip filled with fiber viewing! 

A second venue has also been added to our show, as Stepping Inside the Outside was invited to the Bristol Art Museum in Bristol, RI from February 1 – March 10, 2019.  A former carriage house, the light and airy gallery spaces in this museum promise to provide a unique setting for the quilts in the exhibit.  Both of the jurors for Stepping Inside the Outside, Mary Horrocks and Joshua Willis, will have works on display at this venue as part of the exhibit.

The catalog for the Stepping Inside the Outside exhibit is already available from Amazon.com for $15.. Or you can buy a catalog for $15 at the meeting at the Falmouth Art Center, or the reception at Highfield Hall & Gardens in Falmouth, MA on September 9.

Be sure to catch the work of Valerie Maser-Flanagan at two venues this fall.

North Adams Fiber Artists (NAFA) is a newly formed group of fiber artists. All are welcome to their meetings and to join them! They will have their inaugural exhibit at the Eclipse Mill Gallery in North Adams. There are several SAQA members participating.

FIBER ARTISTS TRANSCEND TRADITION AT ECLIPSE MILL GALLERY NORTH ADAMS, MA

Cross-Section, the inaugural exhibition of North Adams Fiber Artists (NAFA), will open at the Eclipse Mill Gallery on September 7 and run through October 8. Presenting contemporary textile art in a former 19th-century cotton mill, these artists demonstrate the ongoing vibrancy and range of the fiber arts in the Berkshires and beyond.

Cross-Section is just that—a diverse survey of NAFA members’ work in fiber. Knitted, crocheted, woven, felted, spun, handdyed, quilted, stitched, wrapped, knotted, hooked—the fiber arts embrace many construction techniques, including some that date back to the earliest stages of civilization. Informed by today’s materials and technologies but still largely executed by hand, textiles can keep us warm, dress us in style, serve as a container, express a personal narrative, or make a political statement.

The exhibition is designed by Arthur De Bow, Curator at Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts Gallery 51 in North Adams. “In presenting a cross-section of characteristic work by NAFA members, the exhibition invites reflection and conversation on the wide range of fiber arts explored by this group of artists,” he said.

NAFA, a new collaborative network of fiber artists, currently meets in North Adams and is open to anyone in the region who is interested and active in the fiber arts and would like to be connected with kindred spirits.

The opening reception will be Friday, September 7, 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm.

The exhibition will be open to the public on weekends, Friday through Sunday, 12:00 pm to 5:00 pm., and on Monday, October 8, 12:00 pm to 5:00 pm.

Admission is free.

"Patches" was inspired by Japanese boro quilts. The foundation was created by using Japanese shirt fabric that Tricia purchased from a market in China. She added denim and a few pieces of indigo dyed fabric. As she was creating her piece she liked the irregular shapes that were emerging. She used the red sashiko thread to enhance the vertical lines.

She created this piece from fabric dyed in an Indigo dyeing class taught by Carol Anne Grotrian.  The background piece was dyed in one long piece of fabric. She thought it would make a great background of water and waves for her fish. The circle bubbles were dyed abound a washer.  Tricia used the stitching to enhance the movement across the piece. She named her piece "Striper" for the stripes of fabric and the striped Bass fish that are so hard to catch.

Allison Wilbur (AllisonWilburQuilts.com) will have two pieces in this exhibit of quilts influenced by the Japanese Boro traditions and techniques of layered and stitched patchwork. Both pieces are part of Wilbur's series of quilts focusing on fabric and design traditions of Japan. Tsukimi (Moon Viewing) was created with two styles of shibori dying - stitching and pole wrapping, and is quilted with large, boro-style stitches.  Enso (Zen Circle) incorporates the patching and layering of vintage and antique indigos and large stitching.
