Carol Anne Grotrian is happy to announce a new class offering—Stitched Shibori and her Soul Mate Indigo on November 11 and December 1 at the New England Quilt Museum in Lowell, MA. 

This is a two-session opportunity to explore a Japanese slow stitch tradition found among the many techniques of shibori, an ancestor to tie-dye. Seemingly endless patterns are created by hand sewing and gathering threads tightly. After dyeing, the stitches are removed to reveal an amazing diversity of subtle patterns. Ancient indigo is the perfect dye for stitched shibori. 

The first day you will learn basic techniques and then experiment with lots of variations. The interval between classes will give students time for “homework,” i.e. preparing stitched shibori for dyeing.  You will dye a test sample on the first day, but the main focus of the second day, will be the indigo vats, though students are welcome to spend time with shibori techniques as well.

The MA/RI Regional exhibition, Explorations: Journeys in Creativity: Inside The Quilt Artist's Studio, Part 1, will debut on October 13, 2018 at the New England Quilt Museum (NEQM), 18 Shattuck St, Lowell, MA at 1pm. A MA/RI meeting is planned at NEQM prior to the opening at 12 noon.  PLEASE NOTE THIS CHANGE IN MEETING TIME!  All are welcome to the meeting as well.

Also showing at NEQM will be Susan Carlson, including her amazing crocodile, in the Main Gallery and Salley Mavor's exhibit, "Liberty and Justice: New Artwork by Salley Mavor". Many of you will not want to miss this amazing opening day at NEQM.

Sales of the catalog will support future programs and exhibitions in the MA/RI region. If you are unable to pre-order and pick up the catalog at the opening, catalogs will also be available through the New England Quilt Museum gift shop during both segments of the exhibition in Fall 2018 and Spring 2019, and part of the proceeds will go to help the museum.

Look for an email coming to you soon with pre-order information. You will be able to order ahead for this amazing catalog, and pick up your order at the meeting or opening reception at NEQM on October 13.

Catalogs will sell for $24.95, and include 6 pages of incredibly detailed information and great full color photos for each of the 24 chosen artists. Open now through February 11, 2017, Along the Spice Route, offers an opportunity to discover the spices´ countries of origin, the importance of ancient trade routes, and the lasting connections between the world´s cultural heritages.

Water's Beauty, Use and Misuse

CONFLUENCE is an exhibition that was conceived by California artists, Inga Gorsvans-Buell and Deborah Weir, in response to two issues of great importance to them both: water and art. It is a bold exhibition of thematically cohesive artwork displaying a wide range of quilting techniques. The goal of the exhibition is to expose viewers to a colorful and sophisticated experience with a wide array of quilts on the topic of water.  The artists examine oceans and rivers, creatures who inhabit the seas, life in coastal regions, man-made piers and bridges, and the pollution we discard into them. Intellectually compelling, visually beautiful, and intriguingly varied, this exhibition is particularly relevant at this time of rapid global changes.

The exhibition is showing locally at the New England Quilt Museum from July 14 through October 16, 2016. The Curator's Reception and Gallery Talk with quilt artist and Co-Curator, Deborah Weir will be held on Saturday, October 15 at 11:00 am. The program is free for members and non-members may attend for the price of admission. The NEQM is located at 18 Shattuck St, Lowell, MA.
