Quilt as Art: Wen Redmond

If you haven't viewed the Massachusetts/Rhode Island SAQA exhibit Quilt as Art: Transitions in Contemporary at the Fuller Craft Museum, there's still time. The collection is on display until January 17, 2016.

Quilt as Art gives a peek at the range of techniques, materials and artistic visions of our members while still sharing quilting roots of three textile layers stitched together.

From the Artist Statement- One of the pleasures of composition is using a combination of the 21st tool of photography; Photoshop and mediums to create newly rendered digital fiber art. This piece was composed with a photograph of painted and cut papers digitally fused with another photograph of the edge of a glass disk. A variety of mediums, and bonded tissue paper compliment the stitching highlights of the completed work.
Techniques- A photograph was printed, quilted, and cut into segments to create an interior grid design. Each segment is sealed with paint and hand-tied together.

Materials: Digital Silk Noil, paint, tissue paper, glass bead, lava, matt and gloss mediums, pearl cotton & thread.

Quilt as Art Exhibit at Fuller Craft Museum

Our first regional exhibit at the Fuller Craft Museum opens on October 3, 2015.

 Quilt as Art features 27 artists and 35 works from Studio Art Quilt Associates members from Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut. Fuller Craft displays a wide range of cutting edge contemporary craft, seeking to put people in touch with the minds and methods of the makers, expressing the values embodied by craft. SAQA MARI is delighted to share in their mission, showing how the functional roots of our craft take on new expression.

Jamie Fingal served as the juror for the 106 entries submitted by 54 members.  Many thanks for her dedication and time to this challenging task!

For Special exhibit at World Quilt Show, Manchester, NH August 14-17, 2014

Open to any SAQA member residing in New England: (ME, NH, VT, MA, RI, CT)

Entry forms must be received by June 1st, 2014.

Interpret the theme any way you wish, from abstract to pictorial etc. with a minimum perimeter size of 96” and a maximum perimeter size of 200”. 
Depending on quilt sizes, we are limited to 15-40 quilts for the space so the sooner you submit the better. 

New England is, after all, a state of mind!  So whether it’s the seasons (summer, almost winter, winter, still winter), mountains, lakes, people or potholes that inspire you, let your imagination run wild! 

The quilts must have stitching through all layers.  Any technique and surface design is acceptable.

Quilts must have a 4” hanging sleeve on upper back.

Exhibitors need to provide an Artist Statement “blurb’ card to hang with their piece.  These need to include name of maker, title of item and can also include more details plus a descriptive paragraph. (You will receive more info in acceptance e-mail)

Individual quilts may be insured for $100 up to $1000 each (please be realistic with values). Items valued at greater than $1000 require a written appraisal. Items can not be insured for greater than $5000 even with greater appraised value.  Insurance coverage excludes flood and earthquake.  If written appraisals are not provided on items valued at more than $1000, these items will be insured for a maximum of $1000.
